Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed participating in various card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was playing his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little while and moved away to New York City to compete in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard's initial two years were difficult as he would play many hours and fail to win most times. He earned some additional money by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could improve his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and concentrate more on the game.

The actual improvement in his abilities happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would often play against one another. Howard was able to access a few of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would hone his strategic thinking skills. He applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL hold'em.

Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest women players the poker arena today. He headed to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the next 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
