Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he loved taking part in different card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very competitive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard's first 2 years were rough as he would play many hours and fail to win most times. He earned some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he possibly could improve his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and concentrate even more on the game.

The definite improvement in his abilities happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would regularly compete against each other. He was able to access a few of the best players in chess. With their help, he would hone his strategic thinking techniques. He used these strategic ideas in the game of No-Limit holdem.

Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie was a superb student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the greatest female players the poker world today. He relocated to Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the successive 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
