Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed gambling on different card games when he was young. He found himself getting very aggressive in these card games while playing his father. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York City to compete in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard's 1st 2 years were rough as he played extensive hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He earned some additional cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He judged he possibly could boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus more on poker.

The definite improvement in his abilities happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would often play against each other. Howard had access into some of the greatest minds in chess. With their assistance, he would hone his cunning thinking abilities. He used these strategy concepts in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. She is one of the greatest female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard relocated to Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
