Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he loved participating in different card games when he was young. He found himself becoming very aggressive in these particular card games while competing against his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a bit and relocated to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard's 1st 2 years were rough as he would play extensive hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He judged he possibly could boost his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and concentrate even more on poker.

The definite improvement in his abilities happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would frequently challenge one another. Howard was able to access some of the best minds in chess. With their help, he would hone his strategic thinking techniques. Howard used these strategic concepts in the game of No-Limit hold'em.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master poker. She was a great student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct choice. He told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker world ever. Howard Lederer relocated to Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the next 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
