Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he enjoyed participating in different card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in the above-mentioned card games while playing his father. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York to compete in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard's initial 2 years were rough as he played countless hours and lost most times. He earned some extra money by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might boost his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more rest and concentrate even more on the game.

The definite improvement in his skills began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would often compete against one another. Howard had access into several of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking abilities. Howard used these strategic ideas in the game of NL holdem.

He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker world has ever seen. He relocated to Sin City in 1993 and played cash games for the following 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
