Phil Ivey has been labeled as the best poker contender in the world by quite a few of the top pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather showed him to penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was addicted to poker and wanted to learn everything he possibly could about the game. He would tell his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He didn't permit the negative comments from others kill his goal of being one of the strongest poker players on the planet.

He started playing intently after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his game at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The initial number of years for him were a learning experience and winning wasn't a regular thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP where he achieved 2 final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the last table he destroyed a number of the well known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

Phil decided to take his game to the successive level and moved out west to Vegas. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Phil credits his success to discipline and a continuing love for poker. He states that he's learning every day and is quite abashed about his success. Phil knows he makes errors every single session of poker and constantly strives to get better.

Despite the fact that Ivey has won some big tournaments, he likes destroying cash games on a regular basis.
