Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he liked participating in different card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming very competitive in these particular card games while playing his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a little bit and moved to New York to compete in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard's initial 2 years were rough as he would play extensive hours and don't win a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he might better his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus even more on poker.

The real improvement in his abilities began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would frequently play against one another. He had access into a few of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his cunning thinking skills. He used these strategic ideas in the game of NL holdem.

He also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper choice. He told Annie to head out to Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker world today. He relocated to Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the following 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
