Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It's a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The players will have to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many players can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be everyone's hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of everyone's, it doesn't matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same concept in nearly every poker game.

The low hand is more complicated, but really free's up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don't count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don't count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there's no low hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complicated at first, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game simply enough. Since you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 offers an exciting collection of betting possibilities and because you have several individuals battling for the high hand, and a few trying for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to play Omaha/8.
