Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he liked taking part in different card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming very aggressive in these particular card games while competing against his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard's first two years were tough as he would play many hours and do not win most times. He earned some additional money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he might boost his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and concentrate even more on poker.

The definite improvement in his abilities began when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would frequently play against each other. Howard was able to access some of the foremost players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking abilities. Howard used these strategic concepts in the game of NL hold'em.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. She is one of the greatest female players the poker world today. Howard Lederer headed to Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the successive decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
