Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha hi low begins just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A round of wagering follows where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants often get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone's hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must use exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best hand out of everyone's, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same notion in almost all poker games.

A lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don't count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there's no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem complicated at the outset, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing collection of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have numerous players battling for the high, as well as many battling for the low. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
