Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he loved playing numerous card games when he was young. He found himself getting really competitive in the above-mentioned card games as he was playing his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York City to compete in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard's initial 2 years were difficult as he played countless hours and do not win most times. He earned some additional cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he might better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and focus attention more on the game.

The actual advancement in his skills began when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would regularly challenge one another. Howard had access into a number of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking skills. Howard used these strategy concepts in the game of NL hold'em.

He also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest female players the poker arena today. Howard Lederer headed to Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
